Information for parents and carers
Therapy for children and young poeple
We would start by arranging an initial parent/carer consultation, which gives you an opportunity to talk about your concerns regarding your child. One of the objectives of our initial consultation is for you to be able to access a professional, impartial and non-judgemental assessment of your concerns.
If your child is an adolescent, they are welcome to attend this consultation if both you and your child feel this would be helpful. If your child is at least 16 years old, they are welcome to attend the initial consultation on their own, unless they wish for you to attend, which you would then be welcome to do so.
Following this initial consultation, I would offer an initial period of four assessments with your child if we feel that this is the best next step for your child. The assessment sessions give your child and me an opportunity to do some initial work together and to assess your child’s suitability for therapy with me.
Should we decide that my services are suitable to your child's needs and circumstances, we can agree on moving on to the actual counselling/psychotherapy sessions. The work can be time limited or open ended, and would typically take place once a week, at the same time and venue. Time limited therapy lasts between 6 and 20 weeks. Open ended therapy does not have a finishing date set in advance.
